Why Moms Should Do Yoga

IMG_8252

Worker Needed: the pay is low financially, but priceless emotionally and spiritually. Hours are 365 days a year and on call 24 hours a day. There is no vacation and no vacation pay. The ideal employee will have experience as a chef, maid, taxi driver, counselor, teacher, bargain shopper, activities coordinator, and business manager of household affairs and all things related to the calendar. Please inquire within.

Does that describe your typical life as a mom? Moms are busy bees! Moms are also the first ones to put others before themselves. That is the right thing to do, right? No! Moms come from a long lineage of being guided to take on the caretaker role in families and in our society, and along with that role, moms have been taught that we must always put our children first.

However, to be the best moms we can be for our children, we must invest in taking care of our whole being – mind, body, and heart – first before we can offer the best version of ourselves to our kids. Yes, I just said it – us first, then our kids. We must change the formula if we are seeking to be the most joyful moms and families we can be.

But what about the time factor? Well, mom darlings, we must restructure our day-to-day lens of how we do things. Moms, listen up, we are (many of us at least) experts at scheduling and maintaining our families’ calendars. So, let us put first things first – you and yoga. Pencil it in now. There. And, here are some more reasons.

~ Decreases Stress

Moms have a lot on their plate (including my dad moms too). Stress is nasty; it gets in-between our loving relationships with our OHMazing® kiddos. Yoga lowers stress. When we are decreasing our stress, we are saying a big resounding “YES!” to our well-being and the well-being of our relationships. It is obvious now, right? Change the formula: Yoga = Happy Mom. Happy Mom = Happy Kids.

~ Lose the Baby Love on the Bum not the Heart

Other than decreasing stress in our lives, yoga gets us fit and toned. A big discussion among moms post-baby is how do I get all this baby love weight off of me. Yoga of course! Toning the bum and decreasing stress, win-win here keeps stacking up.

~ Yoga Together is Always Better

We love to spend quality time with our kids. Now, we can share the benefits of yoga with our kiddos. Ever tried a family yoga class? They are tons of fun and a great way to bring all the benefits of yoga to you and your whole family. By the way, I know a great family yoga teacher and she happens to be writing this piece. Ok, shameless plug there. Seriously, family yoga gets us to unplug and tune into each other as a family. We get our bodies moving, which is great for physical and mental health, we laugh A LOT, and if you happen to be in my family yoga classes, we always do something creative together. The sense of novelty explored in a family yoga class gets our brains motivated and fired up to connect to our fullest joy, as moms and with our kiddos.

Let us change the formula Moms.   Put you first. Your well-being matters and if you are not well, well then, the latest research in neuroscience shows that your non-wellness likely in the form of stress and intense emotions will have a negative effect on your kids’ behavior and well-being. By putting you first, you are in many ways putting your kid’s well-being and positive development at the forefront.

Remember this – Yoga = Happy Moms and Happy Moms = Happy Kids.
